Popular Channel 4 program ‘Extreme Cake Makers’ today broadcast the making and unveiling of the Extreme Philip Astley Cake.
The cake was commissioned by Philip Astley Project Director and performer Andrew Van Buren as the perfect celebration cake.
The cake marks the 250th anniversary of the First Showman and his creation of the modern circus Philip Astley. Designed and built by award winning cake designer, maker and Extreme Cake Makers regular Suzanne Thorpe in ‘The Frostery’ studio.
After many long conversations with Andrew Van Buren the Extreme Philip Astley cake was unveiled as part of the Staffordshire University Philip Astley Project Circus party.
The event was held in Staffordshire University Film Theatre on 28th November 2018. This was a thank you to the many people who have helped to make the Philip Astley Project so successful. Also to celebrate the launch of the Philip Astley Resource Pack.
The event was hosted by Andrew Van Buren. Entertaining the 120 VIP guests.were a gallery of crazy mirrors, historic circus posters. Acts including jugglers, contortionists, a plate spinner, LED Hula Hooper’s and a Charlie Chaplin impressionist.
Also the Staffordshire Film Archive a year in review highlights film of Philip Astley Project events was shown. This film showed events leading up to and during the anniversary year of 2018,
The guests included members of the Philip Astley Project committee, the Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme Gill Heesom, Lord Mayor of Stoke on Trent Lillian Dodd, Chairman of Staffordshire County Council Michael Greatorex and Leader of Newcastle Borough Council Simon Tagg plus past Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme Cllr Simon White.
The cake was unveiled to an amazed cheering audience, who all agreed it looked too good to be cut into. However the cake was sliced by Andrew Van Buren, then eaten and enjoyed by all as part of the Extreme Cake Makers program.
