50 members of the Newcastle-under-Lyme Rotary Club enjoyed the Carol Gandey on “The Business of Circus” evening hosted by Andrew Van Buren and featuring anecdotes from Carol Gandey’s extensive experience of managing both Gandey’s Circus and Circus Starr, a touring circus offering free tickets to disadvantaged, disabled or vulnerable children.
Following a meal at Newcastle-under-Lyme Golf Club, Rotarians learnt about the challenges of managing a circus company with performances that have toured across the world. Although the technology may be different, the challenges and risks have not changed since Philip Astley set up amphitheatres across Europe over 200 years ago.
The informal talk was hosted by Andrew Van Buren who provided context about Philip Astley’s own career and shared the Philip Astley Project’s plans to celebrate Astley’s life and legacy in 2018 and beyond.
